My immediate verdict: The Avengers: Doomsday official trailer was better than I expected. The dark Infinity War-style tone, Robert Downey Jr.’s intimidating Doctor Doom, Thor stepping into a leadership position, and Steve Rogers’ surprise appearance make this feel like a real Avengers event.
Am I tripping, or did this Avengers: Doomsday trailer come out of nowhere?
I knew Marvel Studios would eventually give us a full trailer, but I was not expecting it to arrive this early. I clicked on it without knowing exactly what Marvel was about to show us, and by the end, I had to admit something:
I might finally be turning into an Avengers: Doomsday believer.
The first official full trailer was released on July 20, 2026. It brings together Doctor Doom, Thor, Steve Rogers, the Avengers, the New Avengers, the Fantastic Four, the Wakandans, and characters from the X-Men universe.
Marvel is keeping most of the actual story hidden, but the trailer gives us enough to understand one thing clearly: something powerful is coming, and the heroes are not ready for it.

In my full video reaction, I go through the trailer as it plays and give my honest thoughts on Doctor Doom, Thor, Steve Rogers, Red Guardian, Sam Wilson, the Fantastic Four, the Thunderbolts, and the other characters Marvel showed.
This article goes deeper into the biggest moments that stood out to me.
Doctor Doom Stopping Stormbreaker Sold Me
The biggest moment for me was Thor throwing Stormbreaker at Doctor Doom.
Everybody talks about Captain America lifting Mjölnir in Avengers: Endgame, and yes, that was an incredible MCU moment. But one of my personal favorite scenes has always been Thor arriving in Wakanda during Avengers: Infinity War.
Thor came down with Stormbreaker and looked unstoppable.
Now we see Doctor Doom stop that same weapon like it is nothing.
That was cold.
The scene immediately tells the audience that Doom is not another ordinary Marvel villain. Thor has fought gods, monsters, aliens, dark elves, Thanos, and countless other warriors. If Doom can casually shut down one of Thor’s strongest attacks, everybody else should be worried.
The official trailer shows Thor attacking Doom with Stormbreaker before the villain stops the weapon, while Doom’s warning sets the darker tone for the coming battle.
This is exactly how Doctor Doom should be introduced. He should appear calm, powerful, intelligent, and completely confident that he is in control.
Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom Does Not Feel Like Iron Man
I have been concerned about Robert Downey Jr. playing Doctor Doom.
That is not because Downey is a bad actor. He helped make the MCU what it is today as Tony Stark. The problem is that his face and voice are so closely connected to Iron Man that it could be difficult for audiences to accept him as another character.
But during this trailer, I was not sitting there thinking about Tony Stark.
I was looking at Doctor Doom.
The voice change helped. The mask helped even more. The green hood, metal armor, and overall design made Doom feel like his own character instead of an evil version of Iron Man.
Robert Downey Jr. was officially announced as Victor von Doom after previously appearing throughout the MCU as Tony Stark, and Anthony and Joe Russo are returning to direct the movie.
My hope is that Doom keeps his mask on for most of the film.
I understand that Marvel will probably reveal his face eventually. That reveal may become a major story moment because he looks like Tony Stark. But if the mask stays on for 90% to 95% of the movie and Downey keeps using this different voice, I believe the performance can work.
At first, I was not a believer.
After this trailer, I am starting to believe.
Thor Finally Looks Like the Leader of the Avengers
Thor looks like he may be the emotional and physical leader of this entire movie, and he should be.
He is one of the most experienced Avengers still active. He has been fighting warriors and protecting different realms for longer than most of these characters have been alive. When the team faces a threat like Doctor Doom, Thor should be the person warning everybody about how serious the situation is.
The trailer shows Thor trying to bring several divided groups together. He tells them to put their smaller disagreements aside because the threat in front of them is bigger than any personal problem.
That is the Thor I want to see.
This does not look like the overly comedic Thor from Love and Thunder. This version appears serious, focused, battle-tested, and ready to lead.
Thor has always been my favorite Avenger, so seeing him step up was one of the strongest parts of the trailer for me.
Steve Rogers Is Back—but What Version of Steve Is This?
Marvel saved one of its biggest surprises for the end.
Thor says they need a miracle, and then Steve Rogers appears.
Thor cannot believe what he is seeing. Steve then calls Mjölnir into his hand, proving that he is still worthy. The trailer officially confirms Chris Evans’ return as Steve Rogers and reunites him with Chris Hemsworth’s Thor.
We got him back.
But is this really the same Steve Rogers we remember from Avengers: Endgame?
That remains one of my biggest questions. This could be the original Steve, a younger version pulled from another point in time, or a Steve Rogers variant from another universe.
I also noticed that the trailer seems careful about presenting him as Steve Rogers, not simply replacing Sam Wilson as Captain America.
Sam Wilson is still Captain America. Steve’s return does not automatically erase Sam’s position or his story. Marvel may be preparing to let both characters play different but important roles in this fight.
Either way, Steve calling Mjölnir back to his hand was a smart way to make the audience understand that this is still the Steve Rogers we respect.
The Avengers: Doomsday Cast Is Massive
This trailer gives us a better look at just how many different corners of the Marvel universe are colliding.
We see members of the New Avengers, including Yelena Belova, Bucky Barnes, Red Guardian, Ghost, and U.S. Agent. The Fantastic Four are present, along with Thor, Sam Wilson, Ant-Man, the Wakandans, and several X-Men characters.
The official Disney page also identifies Gambit fighting Shang-Chi, Mystique, Cyclops, Doctor Doom, Steve Rogers, Thor, the Fantastic Four, Sam Wilson, Ant-Man, Red Guardian, Yelena, Bucky, Ghost, U.S. Agent, Shuri, M’Baku, and others in the released images.
Gambit fighting Shang-Chi is the kind of comic-book action I want to see.
We do not yet understand why these heroes are fighting one another. It could involve variants, misunderstandings, manipulation by Doom, or different universes colliding. Marvel is wisely avoiding giving away the full answer.
I also have to mention Red Guardian wearing the backwards hat. That is the hip-hop superhero style right there. I was digging it.
Marvel Is Still Hiding Its Biggest Surprises
Even with this massive lineup, I do not believe Marvel has shown us the entire cast.
The trailer feels intentionally limited. We see enough to understand the size of the movie, but we do not get a clear explanation of Doom’s complete plan, the main conflict, or every character involved.
Spider-Man does not appear in this trailer, but I would not be shocked if Marvel is saving him for another reveal.
I also hope Marvel finds a meaningful way to bring T’Challa’s presence back into the larger MCU story. That is my personal hope and speculation, not something confirmed by the trailer.
With the multiverse involved and Avengers: Secret Wars following this movie, Marvel has plenty of opportunities for cameos, variants, returning heroes, and surprises.
This first trailer could be light work compared with what Marvel reveals next.
The Trailer Has an Infinity War Feeling
The overall darkness is one of the main reasons this trailer worked for me.
Everything feels dangerous. The characters are not standing around throwing jokes every few seconds. Thor looks afraid. The teams are divided. Doom appears completely calm while everybody else prepares for disaster.
That tone reminds me of Avengers: Infinity War.
I am not saying Doomsday will automatically be as good as Infinity War. We have only seen a trailer. But Marvel appears to understand that an Avengers movie needs real weight, high stakes, powerful characters, and a villain the audience can take seriously.
That is what this trailer delivered.
The Russo Brothers Give Me Confidence
Anthony and Joe Russo returning is another major reason I feel more confident.
They previously worked on Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame. Their return for Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars was officially confirmed by Disney.
The Russo brothers understand large casts. They know how to balance serious moments, superhero action, character relationships, and massive battles without making everything feel completely disconnected.
In my opinion, the Russos have not missed with an MCU movie yet.
They are the reigning director champions of the MCU, and Marvel needs that experience for a movie this big.
My Final Avengers: Doomsday Trailer Review
The Avengers: Doomsday official trailer was not perfect, but it did its job.
It made Doctor Doom look powerful. It made Thor feel important again. It confirmed that Steve Rogers is back. It showed the Fantastic Four, New Avengers, Wakandans, X-Men, and other heroes coming together for a major event.
Most importantly, it made me want to see more.
My final trailer rating: 8.5 out of 10.
I was doubtful about Robert Downey Jr. playing Doom. Now I believe the voice, mask, costume, and darker presentation may allow him to disappear into the character.
The movie still has to deliver a strong story. A huge cast and exciting cameos will not be enough by themselves. Doctor Doom needs meaningful motivations, the heroes need room to develop, and the movie cannot depend only on nostalgia.
But based on this trailer, I think we may be in good hands.
Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to arrive in theaters on December 18, 2026.
