D23 2026 might be the moment Marvel finally looked around and said, “Okay, enough playing around. It’s time to pull out the guns.” Marvel Studios officially revealed its new MCU X-Men cast and then turned around and dropped a second Avengers: Doomsday trailer that made Doctor Doom look like the type of villain who could make Thanos look like light work.
I went into these announcements with questions. I have not been one of those people automatically praising everything Marvel puts out, and some of the MCU’s recent decisions have definitely had me scratching my head. But after seeing this X-Men lineup and watching Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom dominate the new Doomsday footage, I have to give Marvel its credit: they got my attention again.
The quick answer? I think the new X-Men cast has serious potential, especially Storm, Cyclops, Jean Grey, Emma Frost, and Adam Driver as Mister Sinister. But the biggest surprise for me was Avengers: Doomsday Trailer 2. The tone is darker, the heroes look desperate, Doctor Doom looks dangerous, and there is almost none of that joking around that sometimes kills the tension in MCU movies.
Marvel Officially Reveals the New MCU X-Men Cast

Marvel finally stopped making us guess. At D23 2026, the studio officially announced Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Cyclops, Inde Navarrette as Rogue, Maya Boyd as Storm, Christopher Abbott as Professor Xavier, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, and Adam Driver as Mister Sinister. The new X-Men movie is currently set for May 5, 2028.
Ladies and gentlemen, so far, so good.
One thing I actually like about this lineup is that Marvel did not just fill every role with actors who already feel bigger than the characters. Some of these actors have obviously been in successful projects, but this still feels like a cast we can grow with. I don’t want to look at Cyclops and immediately think about five completely unrelated movies the actor starred in. I want to eventually look at Kit Connor and say, “That’s Cyclops.”
That’s how iconic superhero casting works. Eventually, the actor disappears and the character takes over.
Sadie Sink as Jean Grey Already Makes Sense to Me
Sadie Sink playing Jean Grey should not surprise anybody following the MCU right now. Marvel officially confirmed her as Jean Grey at D23 after her character became connected to the mutant side of this universe.
I like the look.
She’s got that younger Jean Grey energy, and Marvel clearly seems interested in building these X-Men from a younger starting point instead of dropping another fully established veteran team into the MCU. That’s smart because it gives us years to watch these characters grow, make mistakes, build relationships, and become the X-Men we know.
My only question is how Marvel handles Wolverine. If Hugh Jackman is still running around while Jean, Cyclops, and the others are much younger, I don’t need Marvel trying to force the classic Wolverine-Jean-Cyclops love triangle into this version. Sometimes you can leave certain things in the comics and move on.
Give me a strong Jean Grey story first.
Kit Connor Has the Cyclops Look
Kit Connor as Cyclops is another casting choice where I looked at him and said, “Okay, I can see it.”
Cyclops has been disrespected enough in live action. Scott Summers is not supposed to be some weak dude standing in the background while Wolverine takes all the shine. Cyclops is the field leader of the X-Men. When things go bad, Charles Xavier is supposed to be able to look at Scott and know that this man can lead the team.
Marvel officially confirmed Connor as Scott Summers alongside the rest of the new D23 lineup.
Now the writing has to back up the casting. Give Cyclops leadership. Give him strategy. Give him confidence. Let that optic blast feel dangerous. If Marvel gets Scott right, people who only know Cyclops from the old movies might finally understand why comic-book fans have been defending this character for decades.
Maya Boyd as Storm Might Be My Favorite Casting

Now we got to talk about Storm.
When I saw Maya Boyd, I said it during the livestream and I’m saying it again: that’s Storm.
There is something about the look that immediately clicked for me. Marvel confirmed Boyd as Ororo Munroe at D23, making Storm one of the core characters in the MCU’s first main X-Men lineup.
Storm is extremely important to me because Marvel cannot treat her like background decoration. Ororo is one of the greatest X-Men ever created. She has been a leader, a queen, one of the most powerful mutants alive, and somebody who can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the biggest characters in Marvel.
Give this woman presence.
When Storm enters the room, I want everybody to know Storm just entered the room. When those eyes turn white and that sky starts changing, I want the theater shaking. Don’t give me a couple lightning bolts and send her back to the corner.
Let Storm be Storm.
Samara Weaving as Emma Frost Is Almost Too Perfect
Samara Weaving as Emma Frost?
Come on, man.
That casting makes sense almost immediately. Marvel officially revealed Weaving as Emma Frost as part of the D23 X-Men announcement.
Emma needs attitude. She needs confidence. She needs that feeling that she is probably smarter than you, richer than you, and already tired of talking to you before the conversation even starts.
That’s Emma Frost.
The character also gives Marvel another way of complicating the team dynamic because Emma has never been the simple, squeaky-clean superhero type. She can help the X-Men while still making you question what she’s really thinking.
If Marvel writes her correctly, Samara Weaving could have a lot of fun with this role.
Adam Driver as Mister Sinister Could Be Marvel’s Secret Weapon
Then Marvel pulled out Adam Driver as Mister Sinister.
Now we’re cooking.
Mister Sinister is a geneticist obsessed with mutation, experimentation, cloning, and manipulating mutant bloodlines. Marvel’s own character history describes him as a brilliant genetics expert with abilities including telepathy, telekinesis, shapeshifting, enhanced durability, and molecular control.
This is exactly why I don’t need Marvel rushing straight into Magneto as the first main villain again.
We know Magneto. We love Magneto. He is one of the greatest comic-book villains ever created, but we’ve already seen multiple live-action versions of that conflict.
Give me Mister Sinister.
Let Adam Driver get weird with it. Let him be creepy, intelligent, manipulative, and dangerous. Sinister is one of those characters who can start something in one movie that doesn’t fully pay off until several movies later.
That’s how you build an X-Men universe.
Could the MCU X-Men Become Bigger Than the Avengers?
I’m going to say something that might sound crazy.
If Marvel gets this right, the X-Men could eventually become bigger than the Avengers.
I’m serious.
The X-Men have everything. Wolverine. Cyclops. Storm. Jean Grey. Rogue. Gambit. Nightcrawler. Beast. Professor X. Magneto. Mister Sinister. Apocalypse. The Sentinels. The Savage Land. Weapon X. The Morlocks. Shi’ar. Phoenix.
You can build an entire cinematic universe around the X-Men without ever touching another Avengers character.
That’s why this casting matters so much. Marvel isn’t simply casting one movie. These actors could potentially become the foundation of the MCU for the next decade.
And then Marvel followed that announcement with Avengers: Doomsday Trailer 2 and reminded me that the Avengers ain’t finished yet either.
Avengers: Doomsday Trailer 2 Completely Changed My Hype Level

I had doubts about Avengers: Doomsday.
I’m not going to lie about that.
But this new trailer? Throw some of those doubts away.
Marvel debuted the second Avengers: Doomsday trailer at D23 with Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, and Hayley Atwell appearing during the presentation. The footage gives us more of Victor von Doom’s history, his relationship with the Fantastic Four, and a confrontation with Reed Richards.
What immediately hit me was the tone.
This trailer is serious.
Nobody is stopping every dramatic moment to crack a joke. Nobody is looking into the camera waiting for the audience to laugh. Doom feels like an actual threat, and the heroes look like they know they may be completely outmatched.
That is what I want from an Avengers movie.
Robert Downey Jr. Finally Sounds Like Doctor Doom
One of my biggest concerns was always going to be Robert Downey Jr.
That man is Tony Stark.
He played Iron Man for so long that the danger was always going to be audiences hearing Doom speak and immediately thinking, “That’s Tony Stark under the mask.”
But listen to him in this trailer.
That voice does not sound like Tony Stark.
RDJ sounds darker, colder, and more controlled. Marvel has officially established Downey as Victor von Doom rather than a returning Tony Stark, with Anthony and Joe Russo directing Doomsday.
The line delivery is what sold me. Doom doesn’t need to scream every five seconds. He speaks like somebody who already believes everybody in the room belongs beneath him.
That’s Doctor Doom.
Pedro Pascal’s Reed Richards Looks Terrified—and I Like It
Y’all know I have criticized some casting before, but I have to give Pedro Pascal his credit here.
Pedro is acting.
Reed Richards looks angry, desperate, and scared. That’s important because Reed is supposed to be one of the smartest people alive. If Reed Richards is looking at Victor von Doom like, “What have you done?” and he doesn’t know how to stop him, the audience immediately understands how serious this situation is.
The D23 trailer specifically pushes the Doom-Reed conflict forward, with Victor’s past and his connection to the Fantastic Four becoming an important part of the footage.
I want the Fantastic Four completely shaken by Doom.
They know this man personally. This isn’t just another alien showing up from space. Victor has history with these people, and that makes everything more personal.
Doctor Doom Stopping Thor Is Exactly How You Establish a Villain
Then Thor comes at Doom.
Now Thor is my favorite Avenger, so understand what I’m saying here.
Thor is not some weak hero Marvel can throw around just to make somebody else look strong. This man has gone toe-to-toe with some of the most powerful characters in the MCU.
And Doom basically says, “That’s cute.”
The D23 footage shows Doom stopping Thor’s Stormbreaker attack and also activating X-Men Sentinels as the conflict expands.
That’s how you establish Doctor Doom.
You don’t spend three movies telling me he’s powerful. Show me.
Let one of the strongest Avengers hit him with everything he’s got and have Doom look like he barely cares.
When I saw that, my hype went through the roof.
The Russo Brothers Understand What an Avengers Movie Needs

Another reason I’m becoming more confident is the Russo brothers.
Anthony and Joe Russo are officially back directing Avengers: Doomsday, which is scheduled for December 18, 2026.
These dudes understand scale.
They understand how to put twenty characters into a movie without making everybody feel like they’re standing around waiting on their turn. Infinity War especially understood how to make Thanos feel dangerous while still giving the heroes emotional moments.
And that’s the energy I’m getting from Doomsday now.
Not Age of Ultron energy.
Not a two-hour comedy.
I’m getting that Infinity War “we might actually lose this” energy.
That’s exactly what Doctor Doom needs.
Marvel Feels Different Right Now
This is what surprised me most about D23.
Marvel feels different.
Between Spider-Man: Brand New Day, this new X-Men cast, and the way Avengers: Doomsday is being presented, it feels like Marvel understands that the audience wants these characters taken seriously again.
That doesn’t mean superheroes can never joke. Spider-Man needs humor because that’s part of Peter Parker. But Doctor Doom doesn’t need somebody making a joke every time he walks into the room.
Let the villain be terrifying.
Let the heroes be afraid.
Let serious scenes stay serious.
And when the action comes, let it hit.
My Final Reaction to Marvel’s D23 2026 Reveals
I came into this D23 stream ready to judge everything Marvel showed me, and I walked away way more excited than I expected.
The new MCU X-Men cast has potential. Sadie Sink looks right for Jean Grey. Kit Connor has the Cyclops look. Samara Weaving as Emma Frost makes sense. Maya Boyd has me extremely interested in Storm, and Adam Driver as Mister Sinister could end up being one of Marvel’s smartest casting decisions. Marvel officially has this new generation of mutants lined up for its 2028 X-Men movie.
But Avengers: Doomsday Trailer 2 stole the show for me.
Robert Downey Jr. finally feels like Doctor Doom instead of Tony Stark wearing different armor. Reed Richards looks desperate. Thor is throwing everything at Doom. Sentinels are being activated. The heroes look scared, and the Russo brothers appear to be bringing that serious Avengers-event tone back.
I haven’t been this hyped about where Marvel might be going in a long time.
I am still watching them closely. They still have to deliver the actual movies. A fire trailer does not automatically equal a fire movie.
But right now?
Marvel is pulling out both barrels.
And if they deliver on what they showed at D23 2026, we might be looking at the beginning of a completely different era for the MCU.
